Gangstagrass? Is that a thing?

So I’m still trying to catch up on all the music we got into the studio this summer.  On the bright side, I’m the hip-hop MD so a lot of the stuff that gets sent to me absolutely sucks.  The downside to that is I have to listen to twenty rappers pretending they are Tupac for every rapper who does something original.

Well, it’s either that or Tupac isn’t dead and he releases a lot of shitty albums.

That being said, we got a bunch of totally sick albums in this week.  My personal favorite is Gangstagrass (You can download this album after the link to bandcamp):

Check out more recommendations after the break!

My favorite track from the album is definitely “Put Your Hands Up High.”  This album is a delightful mashup of bluegrass and hip-hop.  If you’ve ever heard me raving about the album Bluegrass Wrecks the Music of Tenacious D you know how much I love the combination of country twang and more hardcore forms of music.

On the computer this week, we have Astronautalis, who if you are going south this weekend, is playing at the Metro this weekend (October 1st).  He has a reputation for being completely awesome live, and I’m putting his chances at surviving this tour at 50/50 due to his insane tour schedule, so check him while he is still around, and not dead.  My favorite track from this album is Dmitri Mendeleev.  It starts out quiet, but this song totally kills it.  A must spin.

Also on the shelf this week:

Chiddy Bang’s single, Mind Your Manners.  If you know you don’t like Chiddy Bang, I don’t think this will do anything to change your mind, but otherwise it’s a pretty fun, poppy hip-hop track.

Ghettosocks: Treat of the Day. This album has sat up near the top of the CMJ Hip-Hop 40 charts for the past few weeks.  Treat of the Day is full of brilliant samples, and has a more traditional hip-hop flow.  Their lyrics are absolutely hilarious.  I suggest listening to “Out for Treats”; pass on this one if the sound of people eating crunchy foods bothers you.

Theophilus London: Timez are Weird These Days.  It isn’t a bad album, and on the plus side he had an interesting interview with Ask Men this summer.  Apparently he really likes socks.

Theophilus London InterviewThe most stylish new artist in town talked to us about music, the importance of good shoes and why every guy should have awesome socks.
